Edison State College
Edison Campus
Public Safety Administration, BAS

PSMThe Bachelor of Applied Science (BAS) in Public Safety Administration degree program is designed as a pathway to advancement for first responders and other professionals dedicated to the safety and welfare of our citizenry.

The growing complexity of security issues, burgeoning seasonal and year-round populations, and increasing agency interdependence require qualifications far beyond technical and on-the-job training formerly adequate for promotion to supervisory and leadership positions in Southwest Florida.  Leaders of 61 separate fire, emergency medical services and criminal justice agencies in our service district partnered with faculty and staff to develop the relevant and practical upper division curriculum approved by the Florida State Board of Education in 2005.

Upon successful completion of the upper division component, students will be able to:

  • Direct employees to achieve organizational goals
  • Formulate a public policy proposal
  • Justify the validity and reliability of a program
  • Recommend ethical solutions to current management challenges
  • Analyze budgets to forecast future organizational needs
  • Develop an organizational chart
  • Evaluate employee performance
  • Demonstrate knowledge of laws and regulations regarding hiring and firing practices, labor relations, and public policy
  • Analyze and develop planning strategies in response to homeland security emergency management issues including terrorism and natural disasters (wildfires, hurricanes, floods, tornadoes, etc.)
  • Employ a series of strategies, including quality assurance, critical thinking, and fiscal analysis to manage activities ranging from routine to special assignments
  • Manage large scale incidents including the development of long term recovery and mitigation strategies
  • Utilize sound human resource practices to address current public safety issues with an emphasis on employee relations
