Policies & Procedures for CLEP - ® College
Level Examination Program

What is the CLEP?
The College-Level Examination Program (CLEP) is the most widely accepted credit-by-examination program. More than 2,900 accredited institutions of higher education award credit for satisfactory scores on CLEP exams. There are 33 examinations and all are available at Edison State College. Edison does not award credit for all available exams. The current college catalog should be consulted for Edison State College minimum passing scores and course equivalents.

CLEP provides students of any age with the opportunity to demonstrate college-level achievement through a program of exams in undergraduate college courses. Taking a CLEP exam can shorten the time it takes to earn your degree and can allow you to skip general introductory courses. CLEP exams can reduce the number of courses you need to graduate, saving hundreds of dollars in tuition.

Who can take CLEP?
Edison State College is an open test center for CLEP. We provide CLEP testing services to Edison students, students from other schools and the general public.

How do I obtain study materials for the CLEP exams?
Visit the CLEP website at www.collegeboard.com/clep. The Test Preparation tab provides information on study tips, test samples, study resources and exam day information. Informational guides for each subject are also available at the Testing Center, P-207, on the Fort Myers campus. The CLEP "Official Study Guide" may be ordered online or by calling 1-800-323-7155 and is available in local book stores.

How is credit awarded at Edison State College?
Students receive printouts of test scores on the day of the exam. The only exceptions are tests with an essay component. Students wanting their scores sent to Edison State College will receive instructions on the day of the exam on how to complete this procedure.

Scores received by Edison will be recorded on a college transcript showing course equivalent, CLEP score, and credits awarded. No letter grade will be assigned. CLEP credits will not affect a student's GPA.

How do I know if CLEP credits will transfer to another college or university?
Institutional policies vary and it is the responsibility of students to check directly with the colleges or universities that they are planning to attend before taking any CLEP test.

What is the cost to take a CLEP test?
The cost is $80.00 per exam. In addition, a $25.00 nonrefundable administrative fee must be paid to the Edison State College Cashier's Office in Bldg. S-Room 113 and be presented at the time of registration.

What if I need accommodations to take a CLEP test?
Individuals who need special accommodations must provide the Test Administrator with three weeks notification. Official medical documentation from a physician or school will be required. The Test Administrator can be reached at 239-489-9384 or 239-489-9237, Monday through Friday, 8:30AM-4:30PM.

May I retake a CLEP exam?
You may retake any of the CLEP exams as often as you like as long as you wait six (6) months between exams, regardless of location at which the test was taken. The cost for retesting is the same as initial testing fees.

When will I get my CLEP results?
When you complete the CLEP exam, you will receive an unofficial score report. This is the only score report you will receive. An official score report is sent to the college or university of your choice once your payment has cleared and CLEP verifies that you have not tested on this exam within the last 6 months. If you have taken the CLEP and need your scores sent to Edison State College, call CLEP at 609-771-7865.

How long does it take to get CLEP results evaluated at Edison State College?
The Office of the Registrar usually receives official CLEP scores within one month of completing the exam if you have indicated that you want results sent to Edison. Expect an additional eight weeks for the scores to be interpreted, evaluated, and posted to your transcript. Questions pertaining to this procedure should be directed to the Office of the Registrar at 239-489-9104.
