Calusa Indians: The First Residents - Edison State College Auditorium
Calusa Indians, the First Residents will be presented by Winifred Roberts whose extensive research and knowledge of the Calusa was stimulated while exploring her own heritage. The lecture will explore the history, culture and diet of these people, the location of their settlements and the role of waterways and shells in their daily activities.

The Spanish Conquistadors - Edison State College Auditorium
Winifred Roberts will begin the lecture with the landing of Ponce de Leon in Charlotte Harbor in 1513, his discoveries and naming of this new land. Next will be a discussion of the encounters with native people of a large expedition led by Panfilio Narvaez in 1528. She will conclude with the Charlotte Harbor landing of the most noted conquistador, Hernando De Soto, in 1539 and his incredible 4-year expedition that ended at the Mississippi River in 1543.
