Student Leadership Academy
Mission Statement:
The Student Leadership Academy fosters the academic success, personal growth, and social development of our college students through active societal roles to the campus and the surrounding community. Our program will be based on real campus and community needs in which students develop as leaders through taking initiative, solving problems, working as a team, and demonstrating their abilities while addressing these needs.
Vision Statement:
The Student Leadership Academy will intentionally create meaningful learning experiences that teach and challenge students through service opportunities, leadership seminars and insights from accomplished leaders, thus positively impacting student success and personal development.
Eligibility:
In order to be eligible for this academy a student must be selected to apply based upon their existing contributions and skills.
Program Information:
Leadership Seminars/Events:
Seminars mandatory will be scheduled 10 times per year and will be 2-3 hours in length, incorporating speakers who offer expertise in a leadership area such as leadership development, service and volunteerism, ethical leadership, goal setting, and much more.
Serve it up:
Academy members will each present on an approved topic of leadership during the month of January. Each presentation should be 5-10 minutes and include a PowerPoint.
Campus Involvement:
Each academy member will volunteer to help with at least 15 hrs. of campus events.
Capstone Project:
Members of the leadership academy will break down into groups of 3-4. Each group will pick a local organization to partner with (Ex. Big Brothers and Big Sisters). Each member of each group will perform 10 hrs. of community service to help address any needs that their local organization may have. Also before the end of the year each group must fundraise at least a total of $250 for their local organization.
Program Schedule:
September:
-Ropes Course: The entire academy will participate in a ropes course that will help build team skills, communications skills, and listening skills.
-Seminar 1: Members will listen and actively participate in a presentation on Public Speaking. In this, members will gain the necessary knowledge to help them complete the presentations required for this academy.
-Capstone Project: Members will be presented with the necessary knowledge to complete the capstone project. In this, members will enhance their leadership skills through problem solving, civic engagement, and networking.
October:
-Seminar 2: Members will listen and actively participate in a presentation on leadership styles. In this, members will develop an understanding and importance of diversity in terms of leadership styles, as well as, discerning what style each member is.
-Seminar 3: Members will listen and actively participate in a presentation on Motivation. In this, members will understand as leaders what tactics and techniques can be used to motivate followers.
November:
-Seminar 4: Members will listen and actively participate in a presentation on Risk Management. In this, members will learn the policies and rules on liability, financial accountability, and publicizing and promoting events.
-Seminar 5: Members will listen and actively participate in a presentation on Walking the Walk: Leadership with Integrity. In this, members will learn the importance of integrity and develop an understanding of this key characteristic of leadership.
January:
-Serve it Up: Members will present on an approved topic of leadership. Each presentation should be 5-10 minutes in length and include a PowerPoint. In this, members will gain various perspectives on topics of leadership and each member will enhance their public speaking skills.
-Seminar 6: Members will listen and actively participate in a presentation on etiquette. In this, members will learn the proper etiquette that is essential for all leaders. All members will demonstrate their knowledge of etiquette through mock interviews.
February:
-Seminar 7: Members will listen and actively participate in a presentation on Better Meetings with Parliamentary procedure. In this, members will learn and understand the importance of Robert’s Rules of Order. They will develop an understanding as to why time management during meetings is crucial in productive meetings.
-Seminar 8: Members will listen and actively participate in a presentation on Emotional Intelligence. In this, members will gain an understanding to the importance of the emotionally intelligent leader.
March:
-Seminar 9: Members will listen and actively participate in a presentation on time and stress management. In this members, will develop an understanding of the pressure and stress created from procrastination, as well as, techniques to improve one’s time management.
-Seminar 10: Members will listen and actively participate in a presentation on conflict resolution. In this members, will develop an understanding of the techniques to deal with conflict.
Note: All community service hours are expected to be the task of each individual member. Failure to complete all hours without proper acknowledgement will result in an incomplete.
