The Peace River Center for Writers at Edison State College
We offer to our members a number of critique and work groups for free, as a benefit of joining. Currently, these groups meet monthly.
Kids Stuff
Kids Stuff meets the second Saturday of the month, in room O-116 on the Edison Charlotte Campus
at 10am. Devoted to those who write for children, Kids Stuff accepts authors of all children's
genres, from fiction to non-fiction, picture books and early readers up to Young Adult, Kids
Stuff provides critique and a wealth of information on the topic of publishing for children.
If you have a piece on which you'd like to receive feedback, please bring eight or more copies
to the meeting, double spaced. For longer works, please bring excerpts of no more than five
pages at a time, so that all participants have a chance to receive feedback. Bringing a
manuscript is not necessary to participate, and the group welcomes guests who want a feel for
the group before joining the PRCW.
Critique Circle
Critique Circle gathers the fourth Monday of the month in room O-116 on the Edison Charlotte
Campus at 6pm. There is no limit on the number of attendees, however, due to time constraints,
only six participants will have an opportunity to have their work critiqued. Bring six or more
copies of your work to the meeting, any genre, poetry and prose alike. For prose, please double
space your work so critiquers have room to scribble comments. Poetry should be single-spaced.
For longer writings, bring no more than five pages per session, so that each participant has time
to give and receive critiques. Please note that due to the December holidays and campus closure
for Winter Break, Critique Circle does not meet in December.
The Writers' Tea
If the open mics seem too open, the Writers' Tea provides a homey atmosphere in which to share.
Each month on the third Tuesday our writers meet for an informal tea and talk session at the
Literary Suite in the Artisan's Atelier at 117 Herald Court in Punta Gorda. Like Critique
Circle and Kids Stuff, The Writers' Tea is free to PRCW members, but also welcomes one-time
guests who wish to know a little more about the Center and its programs.
Each month, the PRCW hosts two Open Mic events. The first, Open Mic at Fishermen's Village, takes place on the center stage at the Village, located at 1200 Retta Esplanade in Punta Gorda, on the second Monday of the month, at 6:30pm.
The second, Open Mic at Hava Java, takes place at Hava Java Grill and Cafe at 2711 Tamiami Trail, in Port Charlotte. This open mic takes place on the third Friday of the month, and also begins at 6:30pm
The PRCW offers editing services to members and non-members alike. The rates to members are discounted. For non-members, we ask $5 per 250-word page. For members, the rate is $3 per 250-word page. Please call our office at (941) 637-3514 if you would like to have your manuscript edited.
