Unit 10: Citing Sources

Lesson 3: Citation Styles & Guides

There are three major citations styles. Although each style requires similar bibliographic information, each citation style has its own unique formatting and organization. The discipline you are studying determines the citation style to use. Check with your professor to make sure you are using the correct citation style.

The Three Citation Styles

MLA Style Guide: The Modern Language Association of America created this style, which is used in the fields of literature, arts, and humanities. The MLA Handbook for Writers of Research Papers provides the information and examples you need to cite your sources. APA Style Guide: The American Psychological Association created this style, which is used in the fields of psychology, sociology, anthropology, and other social sciences. The Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association provides the information and examples you need to cite your sources. Chicago Manual of Style Guide: This style, which originated from the University of Chicago, is the preferred way to cite resources in the field of history. The Chicago Manual of Style provides the information and examples you need to cite your sources.
