Unit 5: Search Tools: The Online Catalog

Lesson 10: Search by Keyword

To find out what the Library owns on a particular topic, select “Keyword” in the “Search by” box, and enter your keywords in the search field. You do not have to enter your search terms in any particular order.

Searching by “Keyword” prompts the online catalog’s search engine to search every word in every bibliographic record. Doing a “Keyword” search for the search term “King,” for example, will locate books written by the author Stephen King, books about Martin Luther King, Jr., the film “The King and I,” resources published by P.S. King & Son, and so on.

Search Tips

  • You can search by “Exact Phrase” by selecting “Yes” below the “Search by” search field.
  • Use the search methods discussed in Unit 4 to enhance your keyword search.
