Unit 5: Search Tools: The Online Catalog

Lesson 7: Search by Year

If you want to find materials published during a specific year, enter that year in the Year: search field. For example, to find materials published in the year 2006, enter 2006 in the Year: search field. Years must be four digits long.

You also can search by a range of years. To find materials published between 1900 and 1950, for example, enter 1900->1950 in the search field. Separate your four digit years with a dash and greater than (->) sign.

You also can locate materials published during a particular decade by entering the first three digits of a year followed by a question mark. To find materials published in the 1990s, for example, enter 199? in the Year: search field.

What is the advantage of selecting a year?
Limit your search by a specific year or range of years when you need to find historic information, works published during a specific time period, or certain versions or editions of a particular work.
