Submitted 10/12/2011

Making the Wind Sing is an important historical account of the music and lives of Native Americans through perilous times, with emphasis on their only melodic instrument, the flute. The significance of music to their lives (including an analysis of their music in terms of its therapeutic value, the flute’s structure, origin, evolution and comparison between it and similar instruments in other cultures are focused upon. Yet, it is a comprehensive study which covers a number of controversial issues about the instrument’s origin, distribution and evolution in depth. Finally, the people who have been important in preserving it, diversification of its use and potential for future indigenous and non-indigenous cultures are discussed.
