PERT / Placement Testing Information

Edison State College uses the Postsecondary Education Readiness Test (P.E.R.T.) as its entry Placement Test. The P.E.R.T. is used to determine placement in English, mathematics, and reading courses. More information, including tips, a study guide, and practice tests, is available on the Edison Website at http://www.edison.edu/assets/pdf/testing/PertStudyGuide.pdf.

Question: Am I required to take a placement exam (P.E.R.T)?

According to section 1008.30(4)(a) Florida Statute, two types of students are exempt from taking the placement test:

  1. Students who began the 9th grade in a Florida public school during the 2003-2004 school year (or entered 9th grade in a Florida public school any year after 2003-2004) and received a standard diploma from a Florida public school are exempt and may choose whether or not they wish to take the placement test.
  2. Active duty members of any branch of the United States Armed Services are exempt and may choose whether or not they wish to take the placement test.

Our advising staff is happy to visit with you to help you understand what “exemption from testing” means for you. Please plan to visit an advisor at your earliest convenience.

Question: What if I do not fit into either of the two categories mentioned above?

Unless you have otherwise provided documentation showing college-level placement (see arrows below) you will need to take the P.E.R.T. placement test. For non-exempt students, testing is required for all degrees, applicable certificates, and accelerated programs. Testing is also required for non-degree seeking students planning to take courses with prerequisites requiring college-level placement.

  • A Student who has taken the full set of ACT-E or SAT-R within the past two years may bring a copy of the report to the college for testing exemption consideration.
  • Edison State College accepts the highest test scores from any test or combination of tests. This includes any combination of P.E.R.T., ACT, SAT, or FCAT (2.0) scores. The scores are valid for two years.
  • A student who has attended another college/univesity may bring in a copy of the transcript for testing exemption consideration.

The following items must be completed prior to sitting for the P.E.R.T.:

  • An Admission Application must be submitted and processed prior to testing.
  • An Edison Student ID number and a valid photo ID are required in order to test.
  • A student whose native language is not English or who has not graduated from a US High School may be required to take an English proficiency test before placement testing is administered. For more information visit the English for Academic Purposes website.
  • The P.E.R.T. is administered at Edison’s Charlotte, Collier, and Lee campuses and the Hendry Glades Center. Contact your local campus for additional information.
